Nadezhdin said that a different government would allow Russia to 'build relations' with European countries and 'everything will come back into place'

A Russian politician has launched an extraordinary attack on Vladimir Putin, calling for the despot to be ousted from office and replaced during an appearance on state TV.
Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin, who has criticised Russia's invasion of Ukraine, said on Russia's NTV channel that Russians must choose a different leader in the country's 2024 elections.
'We need to choose somebody else, and not Putin,' outspoken Nadezhdin said. 'Everything will be good then.'
It marked the first time anyone had called for Putin to be replaced on Russian state-approved TV since the war began in February 2022, Britain's Ministry of Defence said.
Nadezhdin said that under Putin's rule, 'there is no way for us to come back to Europe'.
'We simply have to choose different authorities to govern the country that would stop this story with Ukraine,' he said on NTV, one of the three main state channels in Russia.
Nadezhdin said that a different government would allow Russia to 'build relations' with European countries and 'everything will come back into place'.
Putin propagandist and co-anchor Ivan Trushkin quickly tried to interrupt Nadezhdin by responding: 'I was expecting you to say all of this word for word.'
But undeterred, Nadezhdin said: 'We need to choose somebody else [in the 2024 presidential elections], and not Putin. Everything will be good then.'
While Putin's propagandists have openly criticised the state of Russia's military and the war efforts, they have steered clear of condemning Putin - but Nadezhdin has done just that.
'Nadezhdin has been a vocal critic of the war since the invasion [began], but this is highly likely the first call for Putin to be replaced on Russian state-approved TV since it began,' the UK MoD said in its latest intelligence briefing.
Nadezhin, a Moscow municipal deputy, is a regular on Russian state TV and in January he said the war was a 'senseless situation'.
The former State Duma representative has also said in the past that it is 'absolutely impossible to defeat Ukraine using the resources and colonial war methods [Russia has]'.
And the criticism of Putin's war has been ramping up in recent months, with British defence chiefs suggesting this could be down to Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's consistent rants about the Russian leadership.
'In the last 15 months, Russia has introduced limitations on freedom of speech which haven't been seen since Soviet times,' the MoD said.
'However, there is a realistic possibility that recent vitriolic rhetoric by nationalist figures such as Wagner Group owner Yevgeny Prigozhin is emboldening opposition figures to challenge taboo topics.'
On Tuesday, Prigozhin unleashed an explosive tirade of abuse at Vladimir Putin's cronies after Moscow was attacked by suspected Ukrainian kamikaze drones.

Head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin (pictured May 5) unleashed an explosive tirade of abuse at Vladimir Putin's cronies toda
In a furious 70-second rant, Prigozhin screamed vulgar insults at Russia's defence officials, whom he described as 'smelly scumbags' and 'b*******'.
The Wagner boss said he was 'deeply outraged' by Putin's troops doing 'f*** all' to prevent explosive drones falling on the Russian capital this morning. Shortly after, Putin claimed that Moscow's air defence system worked 'satisfactorily'.
Known for his foul-mouthed rants, Prigozhin, who handed Bakhmut over to Russia's army last week, was translated as shouting: 'Smelly scumbags! What are you doing? Get your a**** up from the offices you've been put in to protect this country.
'You are the Ministry of Defence. You've done f*** all in order to advance. Why the f*** are you allowing these drones to fly to Moscow? Who gives a s*** that they are flying to your homes on Rublyovka! Let your houses burn.'
'And what should ordinary people do when drones with explosives crash into their windows? So as a citizen, I am deeply outraged that these scum sit quietly with their fat a**** smeared with expensive creams.
'And that's why I think the people have every right to ask them these questions, these b*******.
'But I have already warned about this many times, but no one wants to listen. Because I'm angry and I upset bureaucrats who have a great life.'
His astonishing meltdown came after several buildings in the wealthy suburbs of Moscow were damaged by suspected Ukrainian kamikaze drones, just hours after Putin unleashed yet another volley of strikes on Kyiv.
