Ukraine has already received 34 Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. Germany should be transferring three more pieces of equipment.
This is confirmed by the list of aid provided to Ukraine published on the German government’s website.
This time, the delivery includes:
- 2 GEPARD self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, including circa 6.000 rounds of ammunition;
- 2 vehicles belonging to the German border guard (Grenzschutzfahrzeuge);
- 6 mobile antenna mast systems.
The list of aid to be transferred also includes 20 BIBER bridge-laying tanks and 500 SFP9 pistols.
Previously, Rheinmetall announced that it would start the production of 35-mm ammunition. They plan to supply 150,000 APDS-T armor-piercing discarding sabot and HEI-T projectiles each.
The first APDS-T projectiles will be delivered in the summer of 2023, and the transition of production from APDS-T to HEI-T is planned for mid-2024.
Rheinmetall is creating additional ammunition production capacity at the plant in Unterlüß (Lower Saxony).
Ammunition for the Gepard can also be manufactured at the Expal Systems SA plant in Spain, acquired by Rheinmetall last November.
According to Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, Expal can produce 250,000 to 300,000 artillery shells annually.
The need to deploy new production arose due to Switzerland’s ban on transferring ammunition to Ukraine. It does not allow the producer country to support the country in a state of war with its weapons.
