The Slovak authorities are ready to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine.

Prime Minister of the country Eduard Heger stated this to journalists, Teraz reports.

However, according to him, before the decision is final, it is necessary to conduct negotiations within the country, as well as with the European Commission and Ukraine.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the MiG-29 fighter aircraft had already been decommissioned and Slovakia was not going to use them in the future.

According to him, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky officially asked Slovakia to hand over these fighter aircraft at the summit in Brussels.

“It is these decommissioned MiGs that can save innocent lives in Ukraine,” Eduard Heger said.

He explained that the European Union could reimburse Slovakia for the planes.

“Every aid we provide in this way is paid for by the European Peace Fund,” he added.

The Prime Minister notes that the government is already negotiating with lawyers about the possibility of handing over the fighters, as the current cabinet is appointed temporarily and has limited powers.

Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Naď has also commented on the issue of the transfer of boards. He is convinced that Ukraine needs these planes immediately.

“We can no longer use these machines, so let’s put them where they can save lives. And we will still return some of the money. But the decision has not been made yet,” Naď said.

The Slovak authorities announced the possibility of transferring Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine as early as last year. However, the conversation did not evolve further.
