Another Russian general killed as forces resume Kyiv attacks

Russian generals continue to fall as forces refocus their efforts on Ukraine’s capital.

Maj. Gen. Roman Kutuzov was killed in action this week, according to Russian state media journalist Alexander Sladkov. The journalist posted on Telegram that the general was killed, but no information about when and where he died was available, Reuters reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the general’s death.

WHERE THE WAR IN UKRAINE STANDS AFTER 100 DAYS AND WHAT’S NEXT

Kutuzov’s death comes as Russian forces turn their attention back to Kyiv after weeks of relative calm in the country’s capital. The front lines of the war had shifted east to the Russia-friendly confines of the Donbas region.

However, war returned to Kyiv on Sunday, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Later reports included accusations of Russian missiles flying “critically low” over a nuclear power plant.

“The Russians still do not understand that even the slightest fragment of a rocket that enters a working power unit can cause a nuclear catastrophe,” wrote Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear power company, in a statement Sunday on Telegram.

Russia’s strategies in Ukraine have shifted since the invasion began on Feb. 24. Since that time, Russia has consistently been coy about releasing the number of deaths it has suffered. Russia classifies military deaths as state secrets, even when it isn’t at war, according to Reuters. As of March 25, the last time Russia updated its casualty figures, the country reported that it had lost 1,351 soldiers, a fraction of recent estimations that reach as high as 15,000.

Russian commanders have fared poorly in Ukraine as scores of brigade and battalion commanders have been sent to regions where fighting is the thickest. Many commanders who haven't been killed in action have been fired as Russian President Vladimir Putin expresses frustration that his leaders are performing "poorly."

Kutuzov is suspected to be the 13th Russian general who has died in Ukraine, alongside other high-ranking officers.
