Ukrainian commander besieged in Mariupol asks President Tayyip Erdogan for help

A video handout taken from footage released by the Mariupol City Council on April 19, 2022 shows a cloud of smoke billowing over the Azovstal steel mill and the destroyed gates of the Azov shipyard, as Russia continues its efforts to capture the besieged port city of Mariupol.

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, MARIUPOL - Sergey Volina, commander of the 36th Marine Brigade of Ukraine, who is still entrenched in the Azovstal Mariupol steel plant, asked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for help. He called on Turkey to help get its troops out of the industrial city on the Black Sea port along with the neo-Nazi Azov regiment. Volina made the request when interviewed by a Turkish television station broadcaster, Haberturk TV, Friday (29/4/2022) evening local time.

"I now call on the Turkish people and the president to launch the extraction procedure," said Volina. He urged Ankara "to do everything possible to bring the Mariupol garrison to Turkey" and give it "security guarantees." The marine commander has admitted his troops are in a "very difficult" situation after 65 days of fighting against Russian forces.

He also said those entrenched in the steel mill included about 600 wounded soldiers. He did not specify whether he meant just his own unit or Azov's regiment as well. Volyna also said there were civilians hiding in the basement under the sprawling steel mill complex. There were also injured among them.

Ankara has not responded to this request in any way so far.
