Russian army significantly weaker after invasion of Ukraine – UK Ministry of Defense

03.05.2022 10:55

The Russian army is now significantly weaker, as a result of its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

According to Ukrinform, the UK Ministry of Defense said this in its latest intelligence update published on Twitter.

"Russia's military is now significantly weaker, both materially and conceptually, as a result of its invasion of Ukraine. Recovery from this will be exacerbated by sanctions. This will have a lasting impact on Russia's ability to deploy conventional military force," the ministry said.

According to the update, Russia's defense budget approximately doubled between 2005 and 2018, with investment in several high-end air, land and sea capabilities.

"However, the modernization of its physical equipment has not enabled Russia to dominate Ukraine. Failures both in strategic planning and operational execution have left it unable to translate numerical strength into decisive advantage," the ministry added.

On February 24, Russia launched a new phase of its war against Ukraine - a full-scale invasion. Russian invaders have been shelling and bombing Ukrainian cities, towns and villages, torturing and killing civilians.
