Russia’s invasion has killed more than 2,000 Ukrainian civilians to date, according to the nation’s emergency services.

"Children, women and defence forces are losing their lives every hour," it said in a statement.

Kremlin forces have also destroyed hundreds of structures including transport facilities, hospitals, kindergartens and homes, the emergency services said.

It comes as Russian claims to have taken control of the city of Kherson, in what would be the first city of significance to fall to Vladimir Putin's invasion.

"The Russian divisions of the armed forces have taken the regional centre of Kherson under full control," Igor Konashenkov, a defence ministry spokesman, said in televised remarks.
